The Ontario Health Insurance Plan, also called OHIP, allows Ontario residents to receive free health care. Anyone who lives in Ontario must have a health card to show that you are allowed to receive the services this plan provides. OHIP pays for services that are medically necessary, like visits to your family doctor and regular check-ups.
You should apply for OHIP as soon as you arrive in North Bay. There is a three-month waiting period after you apply for OHIP. It is important to decide right away what temporary health care insurance you will choose to use for the three-month waiting period. Visit Settlement.Org for a list of options that you can pick from.
Keep in Mind
- After your application for OHIP has been processed and your three-month waiting period is over, you will receive a plastic health card in the mail. It is very important that you keep this card with you at all times, because you will be asked for it anytime you need medical services.
- OHIP does not cover the costs of prescription medications. You are able to purchase insurance to cover these costs either privately or sometimes through an employer.
