Canada provides a public health care service. In Ontario, this is called the "Ontario Health Insurance Plan" or OHIP. Most residents of Ontario are eligible for OHIP. You can check here to see if you will be eligible.
OHIP does not cover certain things, such as going to the dentist or eye doctor. It is important to look into private insurance policies that will cover these types of services.
Keep in Mind
You will not be able to receive OHIP until you have lived in Canada for at least three months. It is important that you purchase your own health insurance to cover you for the first three months you are in Canada.
- If you choose to purchase private health insurance AFTER you arrive in Canada, you should do this as soon as possible, as many companies require you to apply within 5-30 days of arrival.
- You may be able to buy travel health insurance in your home country before you leave. It is a good idea to see if this is an option for you.
