North Bay is one of the most economically diverse communities in Northern Ontario. A large percentage of employment is in health care, education, government and military. North Bay is home to Nipissing University and Canadore College, which together enroll approximately 7,000 full-time students each year.

North Bay is the site of the Canadian Forces Base (CFB) 22 Wing. It is a North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD)Control Centre. Today CFB North Bay employs approximately 500 people.

The service, transportation, and tourism industries are also significant contributors to the community’s economy.

The completed $25 million 56,000 square foot Learning Library, and a $12.5 million Media Centre both had grand openings on June 25, 2011.  The 720-acre structure will be shared by the campus of Nipissing University and Canadore College. The joint campus also boasts the recent completion of a state-of-the-art 18,000 square foot Science Research Complex.

The new state-of-the-art North Bay Regional Health Centre opened to the public in January 2011 and is the first facility of its kind in Canada to co-locate an acute care hospital with a specialized mental health centre.

The Invest North Bay Development Corporation works with the City, investors and private sector partners as appropriate to maximize the value of current and future City owned assets with the focus of growing and developing the City.  It acts as a catalyst for operational excellence as well as advises, informs and makes recommendations to the City, as owner, on matters and opportunities pertaining to the operations of the Invest North Bay and affiliated subsidiaries.

With a strong balanced mix of commercial, industrial and institutional operations, North Bay continues to grow by encouraging local expansions and by attracting new compatible companies.
